Best books of 2011

2011: a good reading year

Here's my list of the best books I read this year, listed in no particular order. All were published in 2011 except for those with a year in parentheses after them.

They nicely turned out to be 50% fiction and 50% nonfiction all on their own, without any wrangling required on my part.

Click on any book title to read all about it.

The fiction

Red on Red by Edward Conlon
Hell Is Empty by Craig Johnson
English Creek by Ivan Doig (1984)
The Lonely Polygamist by Brady Udall (2010)
The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt

The nonfiction

What It Is Like to Go to War by Karl Marlantes
Life by Keith Richards (2010)
Bossypants by Tina Fey
Flourish by Martin Seligman
Packing for Mars by Mary Roach (2010)

2012, you have a lot to live up to. That's all I'm saying.

Ooh, I haven't even heard of some of these... *scuttles off to read reviews*

Happy holidays!

Man, I really need to bite the bullet and put together my list.

Rayna -- Happy holidays to you, too! (glad my list contained some "new" stuff)

Lee -- Can't wait to see your list.

Thanks for reminding me about The Lonely Polygamist. I'm doing the TBR Challenge, so I must get this on the TBR before Jan. 1. That may be cheating a little. I don't care. Overall, tasty lists!

Oooh, English Creek! *whimpering, but happy*

Unruly Reader said...

Bybee -- Oh, any time! (your plan sounds like the honest kind of cheating)

Did you read any other books in the Ivan Doig trilogy? Since the 2nd one is historical fiction, I'm ducking it. Though maybe that's a mistake...?

Most of these are new to me, but I'll agree completely on Craig Johnson's Hell Is Empty. English Creek sounds like a good one to add to the list!

I now have The Lonely Polygamist tucked away on my Kindle! No, I've never read anything by Ivan Doig.

Unruly Reader said...

Jenclair -- Isn't Craig Johnson just the best?

Bybee -- Excited about the good reading you have ahead!

Just finished listening to Bossy Pants. Laughed my pants off :)

Stacy - Funny! Good use of "pants."

How did you like Packing for Mars? I love Mary Roach.

Pam -- I adored Packing for Mars. Mary Roach is smart, and she is funny. And I love the space stuff. So it was a total bliss-out book.
